BULGARIA
Relocating is a very stressful time especially if you are selling up lock, stock and barrel for your new life. I would like to tell you a few things i have experienced in Bulgaria along the way. We don't always get it right no matter how much research we do, I am no exception on that one.....
I spent months emailing and hauling the net and i suppose just like anything until you live in that place you don't know fully what to expect that can be the biggest mistake. Never take any one else's word for the place and location, everyone has different needs and they have different ideas of a future. I would say you have to go and stay in the town nearest to where you think you would like to buy but if possible stay in the village where you think you like the house. I know that most forums say that locals are friendly and welcoming but sadly this is not always the case. My village is very friendly and mostly my needs are met but for my children they are not completely. Of course i would like a ferrari as well but thats not going to happen. If you are expecting to settle within a month forget it!!!!
When we arrived i had checked out about what was most important to me, hospitals, schools and easy access to shops. i have all these things on my doorstep i am probably the nearest village there is to the centre of yambol so if this is important then make sure that the kilometres on the site actually do meet the road. Some sites advertise 10 minutes from Yambol well thats depends if you are driving like a normal human being??? 10 minutes to some people can be half an hour so that is an hour round trip instead of the thought 20 mins. This is a classic by the way!!!
Another classic is builders although in the Uk we have set dates to start and finish work?? This does not happen in Bulgaria living with a renovation is very stressful, the builders will not do as asked, they will need everything explained 5 times before the get the concept. I do not talk for all but this is fairly common with most people I have spoke with along the way. If you can deal with very stressful situations then renovation is a good way but if not buy something that is already done!! Also if you are hoping to start making an income as soon as you arrive or as near to it i would advise that you should without doubt buy something that is ready for you. Partial Renovation here can take minimum of six months and then some in most cases. Bulgarians are famous for weather problems its either too hot to plaster or to wet or of course it might just be too cold!!! Be prepared for long haul when you choose to renovate.
I am in the middle of writing this page so please bare with me i am getting round to it slow but sure.
